Cora R JohnsonCora R Johnson has been a member of Blacks in the Government (BIG) for over 10 years. She is a graduate of Saint Augustine’s College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. While attending Saint Augustine, Cora worked in the Financial Aid office where she was responsible for paying the school’s bills and running various reports. Cora also worked in the Registrar Office; she participated in registering students for class as well as working the counter assisting students with copies of their transcripts and other school policies.

Cora was offered and accepted a contracting position at the Department of Commerce, with the Office of Habitat Conservation on October 1, 1996 as a Financial Specialist. As a Financial Specialist, Cora reviewed all expenditures received from Management and staff to verify cost is posted according to government rules and regulations. Completion of these tasks are crucial to future issuance of permits needed for work to continue in modifying coastal and shore habitats and prior to any additional research conducted for restoration, enhancement for the regional and national fishery habitats. Calculate costs of reported items (labor, transportation, equipment, etc.) compile consolidate and summarize budgetary data from records, orders, and reports. Cora prepared the required weekly reports, such as Match/Error and Weekly Document Summary Report.

On September 11, 2000 Cora was offered and accepted a contracting position with the White House as a staff accountant with the Management and Budget Office for the President. As a staff accountant Cora’s main duties were to execute, research, and analyze past accounting transactions, as well as current financial transactions associated with the President, First lady, Vice President and staff. Performed cost tracking of all financial expenditures for the President, First Lady and staff. Cora provided financial spreadsheets to the Deputy Assistant to the President, Director, and Financial Manager regarding travel related expenses. Reviewed and approved all operations related to travel vouchers as part of her duties with the Political transition team under the Clinton and Bush Administration. Verified and approved all final travel transactions prior to staff exiting their White House position.

Cora generated and tracked trip summaries for all Presidential scheduled events. Cora verified payment of invoices to vendors who provided services to the President, First Lady, Vice President and staff. She interacted and communicated daily with all senior officials and staff including the United States Secret Service, Photography, Military, Stenography, Advance Office, and National Security Council to obtain information to process invoices. Cora was awarded a gold clock and pen set from the Director of Budget and Management in appreciation for her diligence and hard work in paying several outstanding invoices. On September 11, 2001, was Cora’s anniversary at the White House; this is one anniversary in which she will never forget.

Cora served as a facilitator for several workshops at the 31st Blacks in the Government Annual National Training Conference. For several years Cora assisted Janice Hall with the NOAA BIG Thanksgiving Food drive and Christmas Toy Drive. In 2008, Cora served as the chair of the Christmas Toy drive where she matched sponsors with sponsored children to make the less fortunate have a Merry Christmas. Cora delivered toys to the sponsored children families as well as created a Service Award Certificate to give to the sponsors. Cora has been elected as the Assistant Treasurer and is excited about assisting the Treasurer in keeping track of all of the funds and expenditures during her term.
